One day left...

.
Another day at Planet Fitness. I took KJ and we did the machines. I did upper and lower body but KJ only did upper...it's a guy thing. I did a mile on the elyptical in 8:54 so that was added to my time for today. I ran almost the entire time. I lost music at the 3 mile mark so I had no musci for 2 miles. Oh well, it was still okay. I'm keeping up.

Grinding it down ... I made the 800 mark. I'm happy with the results. Only a couple more walk/runs. Then a new year for more goals and rewards to reap. I sowed well with my health this year.

One more to add...

.
Weight - 142 lbs.
.
No Blood sugar...I have decided to go to once a month FBS on the first day of the month starting January 1, 2009.
.

.
154/799/1,000 (Monday)

I went to PF with the boys today. Did a full workout and then walked/ran back at home. Good times with them. I hope we can go a few times over the next week and a half.

The Final Countdown...

.
1:07:49
.
153/793/1,000
.
Only 11 more days of this year. I hope to pass the 800 mark by a couple dozen. I did PF today...full workout and another mile on the elyptical. A real downer was that I got on it right when they had breaking news about Caylee Anthony's body confirmation. So, I cried for the 10 minutes I was on the machine and released all the feelings I've had during the last several months. Closure is a good thing thought the outcome, as this one was, is never a good one. (I've always wondered what ever happened Trenton Duckett) I went on and did the machines with a mellow, sad heart. My run was powerful, yet not as quick as I have been. A heavy heart is harder to carry than a light, care free one. Tomorrow will be a better day. It has to be.

The year's about to end...

.
152/787/1,000
.
I think this is my fastest time yet. I can race better now in the cooler and less humid weather. It really does make a difference. I wonder what next May through October will bring for me. I know I will have to adjust but I will figure it out. I always do. Now, to finish the year out with at least 800 miles. I've accomplished mayn goals and even though I didn't do what I set out to do in the beginning of the year, I'm not complaining. I feel very good about what I have done. It will set the stage for what I want to do next year.

Doin' good stuff

.
1:07:28
.
151/782/1,000
.
I missed Monday and Tuesday for PF but I was able to go today and do my 1 mile on the elyptical and then a full upper and lower body workout. It felt good after a grueling few days of prep for a party. The walk/run seemed harder..I was breathing heavier and sweating a lot more, but the time was good. Better than I thought it would be. I guess I am able to move quicker now without realizing it. And I weighed myself this am and am at an all time low since 1995...142.5 lbs. Only 2.5 more lbs to go to meet my ultimate goal which I didn't expect to hit for at least another month or two. Cool!!!

Another physically fulfilling day...

.
1:09:06
.
148/765/1,000

.
I did a full workout at PF plus 6 total miles for the day. I am trying a new technique my massage therapist told me to try. It is doing graduated weight increases and 4 sets of reps with less reps each time. I did 12/10/8/6 on everything except the abdominal machines and the back machine. I did those a little differently. I can already feel a little burn tonight. Cool!!! Tomorrow will be just a walk/run and then Friday will be a full workout again. I skipped Monday since it was my birthday and I spent the day having fun!
.
For Monday, December 8, 2008

FBS - 96

Another record

56:45
.
147/759/1,000
.
Well, I beat my fastest time. I was pushing it a bit but I wanted to see what I could do in terms of stepping up the pace. I was breathing fine. And all with the ear problem that has plagued me on and off this second half of the year. I have learned to live with it when it happens and not let it get to me. I have many more important things to think about and since it has shown me that it won't be leaving anytime soon, I've moved on.

Full Workout

Today, I went to PF did a 9:37 mile on the elyptical, did upper and lower body machines and came home and did my 5 miles in the heat of the day...around 75 degrees. It was fulfilling. I felt really good afterwards and stretched a couple of times.
.
And I just noticed that my time was the same for Wed. Cool!

I also did another 6 miles today. I did my usual 5 plus a 9:15 minute mile on the elyptical at PF. Yeah! Tomorrow I will try to take the day off and go back to PF and do another 5 miles on Friday.

Sweet...I went to Planet Fitness today for the first time in close to 2 months! I did both upper and lower body. As I did a mile on the elyptical, I was able to add 6 miles to the growing number for the year. I stayed under an hour for the 5 miles and did 10 minute mile on the elyptical.

Eureka!!!

.
135/696/1,000
.
I didn't strike gold but I beat my fastest time and by 3 minutes!!! I wasn't trying to beat it by much but i had the wind to do it!!! I am elated tonight! I am almost at 700 miles. I know I won't hit 1,000 miles for the year but in my quest, some things just are meant to be adjusted. I did better by increasing my speed. The days I didn't walk/run was for a reason. The mileage means more time exercising and I have to find some happy median where it benefits me but doesn't take up too much time. 7 miles is okay once in a while but the time adds up over a long period. I will readjust my mileage for next year but I am already where I hoped to be by the first of the year, timewise!!!

The start of a new day...

I keep forgetting to blog my times. And this one is one to remember. I did 5 miles in 12:07 per mile. That's my best so far. I was really excited about doing it that well. I ran more than I walked. Now, to keep it up. It will help the blood pressure and heart stay healthy.

It was more humid again today but I was able to go in the evening without the inhaler. I am glad that the year is entering the stage of harvest. I look forward to the cooler nights and better air with less humidity. As the plants die back, they will stop the production of allergens and allow people to breathe easier. Me included. I am proud of how far I have come. This is the season for reflection. I am reaping what I sowed at the beginning of the year making it a prosperous one for me.

I left at 6:45 pm as I was lost in googleland!!! But, the temp was 78 degrees and there was a great wind blowing. The humidity was the lowest it has been for my walks since early spring. However, I was drenched upon returning! Man, I can drop 5 lbs just in sweat. I'm glad I always bring water.

I hope this is a new trend for the rest of the year. My key to picking up the mileage and hitting my 1,000 walks for the year!

And, yes, I am at an all time low of 151.5 lbs. in my 40's...since 2000. I am very excited that my plateau has "released" me from where I seemed to be stuck at. Now, another 10 lbs. and I will be in the very healthy range of weight for my height. And with a FBS of 93...my dr will be very pleased this Wed. Ah...life is good. I am trying to be good to life!

Whittling away two at a time. It was overcast until 3/4 way home. But, with the sun behind me after 6 pm, it was doable without overheating. I think I am tolerating more anyway. Plus, the inhaler is working longer. This humidity is killer, though1 YUCK!!!

So, I went to PF by myself for a quick upper body workout and did a mile in 10:30 on the elyptical (which I added to the count) and decided that I had to do my 5 mile walk/run. I figured I would go while the cloud was over the sun, thinking it might pile up and start an afternoon shower. By the time I got out there, the sun was back out but with many clouds looming around. At the 1 mile mark, where I usually run from mile 1 to mile 2, a cloud just happened to overtake the sun and it appeared to be long enough for my first running mile. As it turned out, it was exactly that. As I was approaching mile 2, where I resume walking, the sun peeked out and stayed out. So, on my return when it was mile 3, I decided not to chance it and run in the sun as it was about 92 degrees! At mile 4, another cloud overtook the sun and I was in business. Only, this time, I was pretty worn out even just walking in the heat. I ran until the sun came out once again, about 1/2 mile of running and finished the 5 miles in a respectable 1:13:40. I already had 2 glasses of Gatorade and I will do some stretches and shower.

Yes, at 11:45 am I went out with my water bottle and a bite of granola bar and did the walk/run/3/2. I just returned at 12:58 and even though I am drenched in sweat, I feel soo good! Yes, that's "soo" with 2 "o's". Rhymes with "hoe". *evil grin*
.
I can definitely feel the power when it's there. What is there? The 3 D's...Determination, Dedication and Dominance of attitude. I have to will myself to be the best I can be sometimes. But, it can still be done. The distance can be run so-to-speak. And I also have learned more of my limitations. I'm not 20 anymore. Or even 30. But, in my better moments, I can do more and push myself more to go the distance. Now, that's attitude. That's amazing!

Well, if I run 2 miles at a time, I won't hit my thousand for the year but in the big picture, it's about health and not particular numbers. I am trying to lose that last 10 lbs and I know that it will be more likely that I do it by running instead of walking, even if I do less mileage. The big thing to remember is not to injure myself.

Time sure slipped by me. Between all the hurricanes to deal with, leaks, birthdays, "stuff" happening, I took some time off. It was good, too. I gave my muscles a rest and they were ready for a great walk/run today outside in the morning heat. Not too hot...about 80 degrees. I even forgot my inhaler but I did fine. I also noticed that I dropped about 4 lbs. which is probably due to muscle loss from not going to the gym. I'll be starting back there, too.

KJ and I went to PF this afternoon and I did a 10 minute mile on the elyptical plus upper body workout and abs. Then, I made lasagna when I got home so the guys could have a pasta dinner and then I left for a 5 mile walk...that is until a zap of lightning and then clap of thunder followed closely behind about 10 seconds after I walked out the door! I even checked the WFTV Radar Doppler 9 HD for the latest tracking and Oviedo wasn't shown as having showers nearby. GEEZ!!! So, I went upstairs and hopped on the treadmill for an hour + with about 3 miles of running as I finished watching the movie Hairspray. I really liked the music. John Travolta was a hoot!
.
So, now, I am eating my dinner...a big salad with egg, bacon bits, lots of veggies and .....yum..... Green Goddess dressing. I haven't seen that for years. I am avoiding the pasta and garlic cheese bread. I want to drop down into the 140's before the holidays!!!

.
Okay, I did another 7 miles. 4 walking and 3 running. It seems to be working for me right now. The sun was out about 20 minutes of the time I was doing my thing. I took a quick break after the first two miles to the south to refill the water and take a potty break. My legs are feeling it right now but my recovery seems to be much quicker than past months. If I take a very warm salt bath tonight, it helps even more because I can stretch in the tub. My flexibility isn't what I would like it to be but I can work on that slowly. I'm just glad that I don't have the shin or ankle problems I had in the past. Between the massage therapy and the weight training, I think I have the edge now.

I have some catchin' up to do. Slowly, but surely, I will hit my 1,000 miles this year. My 7 miles included 2.5 miles of running. This was yesterday. Today, I took a break.

Hairspray

I stayed in since my cell phone/music maker was on charge. I walked slower than usual which is always the case on the treadmill. But, I was able to get the first half of the movie "Hairspray" in. So, 3.5 miles for an hour is respectable.

A good exercise day

.
2:01:09
.
95/505.5/1,000
.
Today I went to PF for some lower body work and did 16+ minutes on the elyptical for a measured 1.5 miles. Add that to the 7 miles I walked/ran on Lockwood and the total adds up. I am drenched in sweat. I even had to change socks after the first two miles at home. It helped keep any blisters from arising. I had no pain and felt up to this challenge I made for myself. Now, I have to figure out how to maintain this. I still have in mind to get my weight down to 140 lbs or so. I need to step up the cardio to make that happen.

It's Better Than Nothing...

I walked slow for this walk. On purpose? Yes. The heat was up, my legs were a bit sore and my hips were aching when I tried to walk faster. It wasn't worth having any strains so I took it slow and easy.

Smokin' In The Boy's Room...

FBS - 106

weight - 160.5 lbs.
.

93/492/1,000
.
HAHAHA!!! That song was originally done by Brownsville Station back in '73 but redone with Motley Crue, which is the version I listen to on my walk/run. It has a great beat and a good 13 minute walking pace...although, I ran to it tonight.
.
Okay, so I lied. I am going to run and walk, not just walk. I have to get my heart rate up for 30 minutes to keep my weight off and the walking wasn't cutting it. The running is working better. My calves are much more in shape than ever so the shin splints might not be any problem at all anymore. And, I am still having a hard time losing any weight but alas, all my clothes still fit fine. I know I am gaining muscle because of the workouts I have been doing with KJ. He started band camp today so our PF dates are held off until school starts in two weeks. So, I can stay at the gym and do 45 minutes to an hour on the treadmill in the A/C. I can't push myself as hard in the heat so I have to walk over half of the time. I think I could run the entire time on an indoor treadmill.
.
My mileage should have been at 583 by the end of July but it won't be caught up until fall. I am okay with that. My goals are being met for the most part and the mileage wasn't as important as the consistency and staying in shape.

KJ and I went to PF and did upper body/abs/back and then I ran 2 miles when we got home. I was hoping the sun would stay behind the clouds but, no, I ran in the sun. Luckily, there are a lot of trees along Lockwood Blvd. to the south. Tomorrow is my niece's wedding. I'm not sure if i will run or not but I know I will be taking the day off from PF.

.
91/485/1,000
.
I ran 2 miles with KJ after PF (hence, the faster pace) but I also did a mile on the elyptical machine so I count that as mileage. I also did lower body and was able to increase my weight on each machine. I am feeling stronger this week and my mood hasn't fluctuated as much as it has been. I hope that is a trend for a long while. I could use the boost and evenness of my mood.
.
We go to Planet Smoothie after the gym so we are becoming an intergalactic duo!!!

I felt like walking on Thursday morning and even ran two of the usual five. I also went to PF Mon, Tues, and Wed.

Friday and Sat. were off days and I had my ear problem back again overnight. I am feeling better today but it really sucks to have that ear congestion and the imbalance that goes along with it.

No other remarkable walking. It rained quite a bit in Erwin and we were lazy which didn't help. I will have to catch up when I get back home to FL.

Catch up...

.
87/469/1,000 (Friday, July 4, 2008)
.
Wednesday, I went to PF to do my upper body machines while KJ sat and read. I only did a 5 minute warm up on the elyptical machine so I can't count any mileage for the day.
.
Thursday was drive to TN day and there wasn't any exercising then.
.
Friday, we got up in the am and walked 2.5 miles, ran 2 miles then walked another half mile on the Linear Trail in Erwin, TN. It was a great day for this. Weather was wonderful and I remembered my inhaler.
.
Today we decided on a day off and it turned out that it rained all morning on and off so we made a good decision. Tomorrow, we will be back on the trail for another 5 miles.

Okay, so when you cant get outside, you improvise. I went to PF with KJ yesterday and while he did upper body, I did the elyptical for almost an hour. It was a great workout and in the A/C, wow, what a difference. I could have gone another hour...except for the fact that I had some shin/calf issues along the way. It definitely works out other muscles than just walking. But, it was great to do that! I also did lower body machines.

half way through the year

.
Weight - 157.5 lbs.
.
I ran on Friday...under 2 miles since it started thundering and lightning while KJ and I were out. Luckily Karl was coming home from UCF and picked us up at the 1.5 mile point. So, my time was 19:46 which would have equated to about 26 or so minutes.
.
85/460/1,000
.
I am short on my mileage. This is the halfway point and I should have 500 of the 1,000 miles I wanted to walk by the end of the year. I am still working out, doing treadmill warm ups and the 2 mile runs. Luckily, I can walk more as the weather cools down and maybe start some morning walks to pick up some miles again.

FBS from Monday...

I did a full workout today at PF with KJ. Then we ran 2 miles around 6 pm. I got a prescription for an inhaler for the exercise induced asthma diagnosed 10 years ago since I hadn't needed it for a while. So, I had troubles. I had to stop running at the half way point to slow down my heart rate and cool myself down. In the sun, the heat raises my core temp too high. I ran for a half mile and then walked a quarter mile and ran the last quarter. The time was still respectable but nothing like Saturday's run.
.
So, my headline..."What Would You Do?", was the question I asked KJ if I had passed out and he couldn't get me to respond. He did well, saying that he would get my phone (I always carry it) and call 911 first. I wanted to make sure he called 911 before calling home. Plus, I asked him to give directions of where we were and he knows the streets and subdivision names pretty well. i felt confident in his choices...not so much on my choice of when to run!!!

This week has been different for me. I was at an all time low with my mood and low energy to boot. I was pretty sore from the upper body workout I did last week and it wasn't as easy as I thought it would be to coordinate workouts with KJ. Plus, the late afternoon/evening rains kept me from walking outside. This week went like a flash. I was just at my niece's wedding shower 5 minutes ago!!!
.
Anyway, I went to PF yesterday for upper body and today for lower body. Along with the runs I did. That is good exercise but it won't show up on my walking schedule. I'm not going to change the schedule/goal because I know I will be doing more as the weather cools the last few months of the year. Even if I don't hit the 1,000 miles walking, I know that by running, I'm doing even more for my cardiovascular. So, the ultimate goal of keeping fit is going strong. I'm maintaining a mid 150 range and my clothes are all loose on me except for my size 10s which are fitting nice and shapely! *smile*
.
For the good stuff - working out with KJ is a plus side for me. I am glad he wanted to go and he is doing great. I think it will be a big boost to his physique when he returns as a sophomore in August. And it is a boost to me to have a compadre to workout with, even if he is passing me by leaps and bounds.
.
The next issue on an upswing is my mood. I research all the time and I had my massage this week. Between the two, I came up with a plan that I have already implemented. Besides the low mood, I was haviong problems with sleep - especially dreams and clenching my fists and teeth. Jonah mentioned that his girlfriend takes Melatonin to aide in sleeping. Well, I looked it up to see what was available and there are many different combos of pills. Melatonin is a hormone in your body that is made naturally. It is secreted by the pineal gland (a small gland in the brain) and it has to do with setting the "tone" for sleep. The people who are diagnosed with SAD (seasonal affective disorder) have a low melatonin level possibly due to the body reacting to the change in sunset along with the daylight savings time. So, I went to Sam's and found a bottle of Melatonin along with a B vitamin and after taking it the last three nights, I have had a much more restful sleep and wake up more ready to "get up and moving". I had mentioned the prescription of Ambien that my OB/Gyn had given to me which I never filled and he poo-pooed it just like I was doing. I rather try something natural so the Melatonin did the trick.
.
The mood problem - Jonah had just seen an advertisement in a Costco catalogue with a bunch of different vitamin supplements something called Sam-E. He said it was a mood booster and might help. I looked up Sam-E on-line the night before I went to Sam's and found a lot more info on it. It sounded like just what I needed. It was pricey but with all the different supplements in it, I thought I might give it a try. (After all, the alternative is to be back on an antidepressant.) I have had 3 daily doses so far and have already noticed an upswing in my mood. The last thing I did was look up all the latest info on the ***AHEM***just clearing my throat - pyramid scheme - juices that you can purchase through the various "distributors". One doesn't give nutritional info on the packaging. The others give the info and I was able to look up info about them - good and bad. People are either for them or against them. Some swear by them and others say they are just overpriced vitamins, etc... I see some interest on my part to give them a try but not the $30-40 per bottle price that I would have to fork out to a distributor. So, back at Sam's again, they had several bottles and I bought two. One was called Glacial Milk and it appeared to be packed with plenty of supplements that might bring better health to me. It was $19 per bottle. The other was Frut A Vie which it says on the web is a Mona Vie knock off only much less expensive. I found it at Sam's for $17 per bottle so I am going to try it after I finish the Glacial Milk. I am hoping to see some great results. I don't think I can lose. We'll see.

Sweatin' with the oldie...

.
81/452/1,000
.
Kj is continuing to come out and run/walk with me (I'm the oldie) and we ran 2 miles and walked 4 miles then ran the last mile. It was extremely humid out but luckily, the sun was behind a large cloud for most of it. I still sweat profusely and have to keep plenty of water on hand to replenish my fluids. We came home after the two mile run so that I could get a bottle of Gatorade and I also filled up the water bottle I had taken with me from the run. It was enough to get me through the 7 miles. Now, I have to rest up for a big day tomorrow. I am still so sore from the workout at Planet Fitness the other day. It takes me many days to recouperate from the machines. When I was younger, life was so much easier and less painful!!!

Today was KJ's first of two sessions with the staff trainer at Planet Fitness. I followed them around and when she was done, KJ did some free weights while I did my upper body exercises. Karl came in while I was doing the machines and took KJ upstairs to show him the abdominal routine. Then KJ and I ran 2 miles back home on Lockwood Blvd. I'm not getting my 5 miles in that I need to keep up the 1,000 by the end of the year. I will have to figure a way to fit that in. However, the run/jog is still good for the cardiovascular and I am not able to do more than 2 miles in a row of running. Today just happened to be cutting it too close to getting dinner on the table along with the late afternoon session and run. Some goals might need adjustment.

Can't Beat The Heat...or can you?

.
1:00:33

.
KJ and I went to PLanet Fitness to sign him up for weightlifting. We scheduled his consultation for tomorrow morning at 8 am where he will get the full run down on the machines but we didn't workout there today. Instead we celebrated by running 2 and walking 2 in the 1 pm heat of the day. We both had our camelbaks on and we were ready to go. He ran back a minute and a half faster than I did. Now, it's time for a quick jump in the pool and then a late afternoon lunch at a new place..."Welcome to MOE'S".
.
Yes, the heat can be beat here...it's over 100 degrees up north!!!

Okay, I'm changing, as is my perogative, as a woman and also a sagittarian!
.

I decided to run 2 miles and after I got out, I wanted to go some more so I walked another mile and ran the last...and may I say, when I use the word "ran" or any tense of it, I mean it quite loosely. I guess it would be jogging but when I use the word run, it sounds more serious and I am quite serious. Kj said he would go tomorrow for a run. I will do that, too.

Wednesday's long one...

.
1:44:37
.
77/435/1,000
.
KJ and I ventured out into the world of pre-summer fun yesterday as we jogged for 2 miles to the south on Lockwood Blvd then walked my pace for the 5 miles to the north part of Lockwood. Well, we jogged for the last 3/4 mile home, too. The time could have been a bit faster but with the heat and not having jogged for a long time, we took it slow.
.
Today is the day of reckoning. My legs took a beating with the run yesterday but it is the good "no pain, no gain" type of feeling that one gets when starting a new program. I am going to skip any exercise today to allow this change to be a positive motivator for future endeavors.
.
KJ plans to exercise with me this summer. He has one more day of school and then we will be going to Planet Fitness so he can get a membership there. He won't be walking all my walks with me but it will be good for us to go to the gym together a couple times a week. And Karl has a membership there so he can take KJ some of the time.

I walked early today instead of evening time. I wanted to walk all the way around on Lockwood to McCulloch to Alafaya Trail to Mitchell Hammock back down Lockwood to home. It was 9.3 miles to complete. I thought it would be longer but I calculated it. My legs are tired and a bit sore but I didn't have any trouble doing that mileage. I may keep it up once a week. It's a good change.

It is quite humid between rains. But, we really need the rain so I won't complain. I will just keep walking...just a little bit slower.

Holy mackerel!!! That's my fastest time. And who knew?!!! I have been slow the last few days. And even though I wasn't in a super amount of pain, my legs were not able to push fast like I would have liked. And to top it off, I started my monthly cycle on, of all days, Mother's Day!!! So, I go outside and start walking and I noticed immediately that my legs were like clouds. Light and fluffy!!! (Okay, marshmallows are also light and fluffy but...come on, do you think I'm going to compare them to that?!!!) I could have sprinted for the 5 miles if I had let myself! The entire walk, I felt great. No pains, breathing was fine, my baby toe healed without needing a bandaid..everything was right today!!! And, yes, I did get a lotto ticket this afternoon - before my walk! So, I hope tomorrow night's lotto drawing continues what today started!

Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow.

No Walk but news from Monday...

.
Weight - 158 lbs.
.
FBS - 97
.
I went to see my doctor today. He hadn't seen me since November. He was very happy to see that I had lost weight and that my FBS in Feb. (I saw the ARNP) was 90! He said to keep doing what I'm doing. My BP was 96/72 - WOO-HOO!!! I never had a problem with it - except when I was PG with Karl - Go Figure!!! And now, everything looks good. My waist measurement is 27" - down from 32"!!! I'm really excited, can you tell?
.
Everything looked good enough that I decided to go on the Lamisil pill for the toenail infection I have had for several years. I want my nails back so that I can wear polish on them. No topical has worked so far so I decided to try it with his okay.
.
